Mandalas

A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing the attention of practitioners, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. In New Age, the mandala is a diagram, chart, or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a time-microcosm of the universe, but it was originally meant to represent wholeness and a model for the organizational structure of life itself; a cosmic diagram that shows the relation to the infinite and the world that extends beyond and within minds and bodies (Wikipedia).

During the long year that wasn’t, 2020, we were in the midst of a seemingly endless Coronavirus shutdown and equally endless presidential campaign. In the fall of 2020, my friend Chris Jordan, a super-talented photographer, filmmaker, and writer posted a Mandala online he created from a photograph of a tree. It blew my mind! I started using some of my aerial photographs and later my land-based photographs along with the techniques Chris taught me to make Mandalas. It was like someone turned on a firehose. They just keep coming. I’m not sure where the journey is going, but I’m gonna hang on for the ride as I continue to experiment and turn the many dials in Photoshop to see what is revealed. I have also been inspired by the amazing still and video Mandala work of Kate Q. Sibole. I had a show of this work at the Viewpoint Gallery in Sacramento in September 2021. Prints are much more powerful than the images seen on-screen.
